After hitting more than 20 million users towards the end of last year, social network Bluesky is certainly one to watch for 2025. With a mass exodus from X linked to Musk’s political connections, Bluesky has become the preferred alternative for many thanks to its similarities to the original Twitter platform.

So should your brand be on Bluesky? Here we’re going to share with you everything you need to know about the network, its top features and its potential going forward.

Factsheet

  • Bluesky was founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in 2019 as part of Twitter

  • It became an independent company in 2021

  • Launched as an invite-only service in February 2023

  • Opened to public registrations in February 2024

  • Jack Dorsey left Bluesky Social’s board by May 2024

Top features

With many familiar features, Bluesky is similar to Twitter in its structure. Posts are limited to 300 characters, 4 images and videos must be under 60 seconds. Users can also reply to, repost and quote posts.

One of the most interesting elements of Bluesky is the Custom Feeds feature. Here you can choose and create algorithmic feeds, so you have more control over what type of content you see based on your interests. You can add feeds such as “Popular With Friends”, "Gardening" and even "Cat Pics".

Bluesky introduced “anti-toxicity” features in August 2024, meaning the users can hide replies and “detach” quote posts from their original post.

In December 2024, Bluesky introduced a “Trending Topics” feature, similar to X, where users can see the words and phrases that are currently extremely popular. However, Bluesky allows users to disable this feature in settings as well as adding muted words.

As well as a private chat facility, users can search for content and create lists.

Currently Bluesky doesn’t have a formal verification system, which can make it more challenging to identify the accounts you want to follow. There is also no paid or subscription tier available.
